Hi, I’m Mr. T— the facilitator behind Music With Mr. T
I create inclusive drumming experiences that bring people together through rhythm, movement, and shared energy. Whether I’m working with students, educators, or community groups, my focus is always the same: connection first, music second.
Meet Mike Troina - aka Mr. T
Mr. Troina is a dedicated musician and educator with a lifelong passion for music. His journey began at the age of three when he started playing piano. He went on to refine his craft under the mentorship of Dr. Gary Smart at the University of North Florida, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education.
Since 2008, Mr. Troina has been sharing his love for music as an elementary school music teacher, inspiring young learners to explore their musical potential. From 2017 to 2022, he served as the founding band director of the Roaring Panther Band.
Under his leadership, the program transformed from a beginner-level ensemble into a dynamic 60-piece marching band, becoming a source of pride and entertainment for the Gaston County, NC community. Notably, the Roaring Panther Band is one of the few elementary school marching bands in the United States, a testament to Mr. Troina’s innovative vision and commitment to excellence.
Mr. Troina’s passion for music began in his youth when he joined his school band, playing tenor saxophone. His versatility quickly became apparent as he was called upon to master a variety of other instruments, including bass clarinet, alto saxophone, bass drum, xylophone, and marimba. His leadership and dedication earned him the role of band captain during his senior year of high school, setting the stage for a lifelong journey in music.
Beyond piano and saxophone, Mr. Troina is a true multi-instrumentalist. His repertoire includes guitar, bass guitar, drums, African drums, and countless other instruments. Driven by an unwavering love for music, he takes pride in inspiring and educating his students, fostering a deep appreciation for the art of music in each of them.
Since 2021, Mr. Troina has introduced his students to the vibrant and rich traditions of West African Mandingue rhythms. Through hands-on practice with the djembe, students not only develop their percussion skills but also gain an appreciation for the cultural heritage of these rhythms, rooted in the villages of West Africa. Much of the repertoire is inspired by the teachings of Master Drummer Mamady Keita, along with influences from renowned artists such as Babatunde Olatunji, Bolokada Conde, and Famoudou Konaté.
When he’s not sharing his passion for music, Mr. Troina enjoys quality time with his wife, son, and two daughters. Together, they explore the beauty of the Charlotte, NC, area, hiking in the mountains and discovering new adventures.
